If you’re experiencing breakout-prone skin, chances are your skin is sensitised. And you’re not alone! We’re going to share with you an easy routine to manage your sensitised skin, so you can be on your way to soothed, happier and healthier skin!
Breakout-prone and sensitised skin, explained
When we say sensitised skin, we mean the condition of the skin (not sensitive skin, meaning a skin type). Sensitised skin can be identified by skin redness, flushing, stinging, dehydration or breakouts and it can be caused be environment or lifestyle factors including pollution, climate, hormones, stress, medication, diet, smoking and even over-exfoliating or overuse of active skincare ingredients (e.g. AHA’s, BHA’s, vitamin C, retinol). Basically, when your skin has become sensitised, it acts up.
Breakout-prone skin is most experienced for those with oily skin types, where the skin produces more natural oils (called sebum), or as a result of sensitised skin like we’ve outlined above.
Basically, when it comes to addressing breakout-prone skin, addressing the root cause of sensitised skin is the way to go. And we’ve curated the perfect palette to help you out.
The Clear Essentials (with Purified)
Designed to gently care for and restore your skin (and your skin’s barrier), The Clear Essentials (with Purified) focuses on a reduced routine including a cleanser, exfoliant, toner and moisturiser. When your skin is sensitised, it’s best to put the active ingredients aside and get into restoration mode.
Stick with this set for at least 28 days (a full skin cycle) to give your skin a good chance at healing. After this, assess where your skin is at before jumping back into an extended routine.
Cleanse morning and night with this gentle cleanser, formulated with soothing aloe vera. It’s designed to cleanse your skin, without drying it out and stripping it of its natural oils. Remember not to over cleanse!
Gently exfoliate just once per week while your skin is sensitised. The only goal here is to gently polish away any built-up and dead skin cells, nothing more. By polishing away any skin build up, you’re assisting your breakouts, while your following toner and moisturiser products will be able to penetrate and soothe the skin better. Let’s make a pact not to aggravate any breakouts, or compromise your skin barrier in any way! So super super gentle! Warm your skin up with lukewarm water first.
Harmony: Radiance Boosting Toner
Spritz Harmony after cleansing (or exfoliating, if it’s exfoliation day) to dissolve clogged pores. It’s got willow bark and witch hazel – a combination that work to clean dirt and oil from pores, while acting as an anti-inflammatory to reduce the appearance of redness and breakouts.
The Limelight: Brightening Probiotic Lotion
This superstar assists your skins overall health. Formulated with probiotics, it works to soothe the appearance of breakouts and redness, and fortify the skin’s protective barrier too (super important for sensitised skin, as that’s often caused by a compromised skin barrier).
Some more quick tips
- Cleanse after washing your hair, not before
- Cleanse thoroughly into your hairline
- Wash your hands before beginning your skincare routine
