RAWKANVAS The Limelight: Brightening Probiotic Lotion

Why probiotics are worth the hype in your skincare

While abuzz in the gut health world, probiotics aren’t just for the gut! In fact, they’re completely worth the hype in our skincare routine too. And we’ll tell you why.

Our body is home to trillions of microorganisms (even more-so than human cells) and an absolute bunch of these live on our skin, known as our skin microbiome, to promote skin health by reinforcing our skin’s natural barrier of defence, protecting against environmental damage and regulating PH levels to help our skin look plump, dewy and dare we say, healthy.

But with the likes of over washing, harsh facial cleansers and antibacterial soaps we can inadvertently strip our skin of these good bacteria and damage our skin’s microbiome balance – resulting in everything from stressed and dry skin to breakouts, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis.

So how do we restore the skin’s microbiome balance and achieve plumper, dewier and healthier skin? Probiotics in skincare.

The skin’s microbiome

Just to recap, our skin’s microbiome is the community of microorganisms that live on the surface of our skin. Our skin’s microbiome is critical to our skin’s health as it plays an important role in reinforcing our skin’s natural barrier of defence (e.g. providing immunity and defence against bugs), protects against environmental aggressors (e.g. pollution, UV rays) and helps to regulate our skin’s natural PH levels. When our skin’s microbiome is out of balance, we can expect stressed, dry skin and the likes of breakouts, eczema, etc.

Probiotics in skincare

Probiotics are simply cultures of ‘good’ microorganisms that are living in our body and on our skin and they help with our overall health. In the gut they can assist with digestion, serotonin production and protecting us from illness. When it comes to skincare, they can optimise the healing benefits of our skin’s good bugs by delivering nutrients to our skin to protect against bad bacteria, decrease inflammation, assist to prevent premature ageing and more.

Probiotics are particularly good for those of us who experience breakouts because they create an optimal environment for our good bacteria, helping in the fight against bad bacteria (one of the causes of breakouts in the first place).

Getting probiotics into your skincare routine

As we can tell by now, one of the best ways to keep our skin’s microbiome in balance is to add probiotic-infused skincare products into our routine. We recommend taking a look at the two products we developed specifically for this:

Luminosity: Brightening Probiotic Mask – This is a soothing and brightening mask that can be used once or twice a week to maintain a delivery of probiotics to your skin. It assists to fortify the skin’s barrier, protect your skin from environmental aggressors and it assists to exfoliate, brighten and minimise the appearance of pigmentation too.

The Limelight: Brighten Probiotic Lotion – This is a soothing and brightening lotion that can be used daily (morning and night) to constantly deliver probiotics to your skin. It assists to fortify your skin’s barrier, protect your skin from environmental aggressors and it assists to brighten and plump your skin too.

And just like that, we’re on our way back to our healthiest skin yet!
