Luckily there are some simple changes you can make to your skincare routine to ensure you are keeping your baby safe while also addressing your skin’s changing needs.
Everyone wants to experience that ‘pregnancy glow’ and one way to achieve this is by recognising the changes your skin is going through and getting on top of your skincare routine early.
It can also be confusing to know which ingredients to avoid when pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s important to note that everyone has different preferences when it comes to skincare and everyone will experience different changes to their skin during pregnancy so take the time to understand what your skin needs and do your research.
Pregnancy safe skincare for dry or sensitive skin
When you fall pregnant, you may find that your skin becomes overly sensitive and less tolerant of ingredients. If you notice your skin is becoming red more easily, irritated or inflamed, we recommend changing up your skincare routine and avoiding anything that may cause irritation such as essential oils and perfume.
If your skin starts to become dry and tight, you should look to incorporate hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and oils that are naturally rich in vitamins such as jojoba oil.

Pregnancy safe skincare for oily or breakout-prone skin
Changes to your hormones during pregnancy may also cause your skin to produce more oil and breakout. Although it isn’t ideal, it’s totally normal and can be controlled safely!
We recommend switching to a more gentle type of exfoliant such as an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). AHAs work by resurfacing your skin and removing excess oil without stripping it of its natural barrier. Lactic acid is a popular type of AHA that is effective in exfoliating the skin while still leaving it hydrated and plump.
To effectively clean your skin and remove excess oil, use a cleanser such as Purified: Purifying Cleanser which contains a vegan lactic acid and green tea that also helps to soothe skin and calm breakouts.
Ingredients to avoid while pregnant or breastfeeding
To ensure you and your baby are both safe, it’s best to avoid some ingredients while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Ingredients such as retinol (vitamin A) and other topical prescription products should be avoided. Although retinol is amazing for plumping and smoothing skin, there is research to suggest that high doses of vitamin A can be potentially harmful. Small amounts used on your skin are unlikely to do damage however it’s better to avoid using retinol until after you have finished breastfeeding, just to be safe.
Although in small amounts or low concentrations some of these ingredients are still considered safe, we also recommend avoiding the overuse of products that contain high doses of essential oils, fragrance, benzoyl peroxide, and chemical sunscreens that contain possible hormone disruptors like oxybenzone or avobenzone.
If you’re unsure about a product or can’t find an ingredients list, it’s best to avoid it altogether and look for an alternative. If you’re still unsure, consult with a healthcare professional.
